How We Merged Our Styles to Create Our First Home Together

You may think there isn't a lot to learn about each other after being together for over six years. I mean, we've seen each other at our cutest, our grossest and everything in between. But when we bought our first house and started to make interior design decisions together, we really learned how different our tastes actually are.

We're both really minimal, because we live creative lives, we want our spaces to be like a blank slate. But we're minimal in different ways. And while there were some trips to Bed, Bath, & Beyond that tested our love, the project of creating a home together actually deepened our relationship.

Read on to see how we merged our aesthetics, tangled up our ideas, and created something completely new and different. Also, just kidding about BB&B testing our love. We actually debated color swatches like two design nerds. Who knew there could be so many shades of white?!

Part 1

Kitchen Witchery

Clean Lines Meet Vintage Charm

Millie: "Cooking is a true ritual for me so I wanted our kitchen to feel open and functional, with lots of natural light. Plenty of space to mix up concoctions, and make magic—literally and figuratively. I love clean lines, so the sleek, minimalist vibe of the Hendricks Dining Table was a perfect fit. Its simple pine finish makes it versatile, and I can see it transitioning with us as our style evolves."

Kim: "I'm more of a cooking spectator. But that doesn't mean I don't have opinions on the look of the theater. I like to add pops of color, so I made sure to add some warmth and personality. The Kesey Oak Barstool in its rich oak finish is sturdy but adds a bit of flair. It's functional but also speaks to my love for vintage charm, and I love how it contrasts with the table Millie chose."

Together, our kitchen balances clean minimalism with colorful accents, creating a space that feels both inviting and functional. And ready for herbalism, seances, and spellwork.

Part 2

Cozy Cave

Practical Indulgence for Book Clubs and Netflix Binges

Millie: "We knew the living room needed to be a space where we could entertain but also unwind. We are guilty of a Netflix binge now and again. But also—book clubs, game nights, and gaaaame night. The Habermas Birch Sofa Frame was a no-brainer for us. It's so comfortable and versatile—it gives us the perfect spot to lounge or have guests over without feeling crowded."

Kim: "I love the idea of layering textures and using bold statements. Since it's the room where we'll have guests most often, it's where we want to show off a little. Make it fab. The Hornby Occasional Chair adds a bit of depth with its soft velvet fabric, and it gives the space a touch of glamour. It balances the loveseat perfectly, especially when I'm hosting friends or working on music projects."

Their living room is a mix of practicality and indulgence, with pieces that allow them to host the best book club the city of Seattle has ever seen.

Part 3

Love Nest

Serene, Warm, and a Little Eclectic

Millie: "When it comes to our bedroom, I wanted a calm, peaceful space—something that felt like a true retreat. The Maritain Wood King Bed in its warm wood tones really sets the vibe—for snuggles, romance, or just a regular afternoon nap. It's simple but feels luxurious, and it matches my desire for minimalism while still feeling cozy."

Kim: "I wanted the room to feel warm and inviting but with some personality. The Lankesh Teak Dresser has the teak accents that allows it to exist alongside the darker wood bedframe. I also love how it gives us extra storage for all our things. It's a piece that feels a little more unique and eclectic, which I love."

Together, they transformed their bedroom into a space where they can both recharge and connect, blending serenity with refined yet eclectic pieces. It's their brand of sexy.

Part 4

Office Space

Creative Hub for Two Different Kinds of Creative

Millie: "As a graphic designer, my office needs to inspire me and keep me organized. I was drawn to the Saramago Oak Desk because of its clean design and ample workspace. I love that it feels professional but also invites me to be my neurodivergent self—sticky notes, magic markers and all."

Kim: "My studio space needed to feel dynamic. I needed something functional but a little rock 'n' roll. The Suzuki Oak Chair is a game-changer—it's ergonomic but still stylish. I also love how it complements the desk Millie chose. Plus, it's perfect for long studio sessions when I can't get out of my chair until I perfect the vocal balance #iykyk"

Together, their office is a space that supports their work while allowing them to collaborate. The mix of neutral furniture and functional design with pops of personality makes it the perfect creative hub.

Final Thoughts

Two Aesthetics, One Home

Creating a home together isn't just about picking furniture—it's about negotiating identities, honoring differences, and finding the overlap where both of you can breathe. For Millie and Kim, that overlap turned out to be a love of quality, a bias toward the minimal, and a shared belief that a home should make you feel like yourself the moment you walk in.
